Today we discussed line and learned ways to describe intimate lines. A line is a way of getting from one point to another. They vary according to shape (straight, curvilinear, diagonal), thickness and texture. Depending on what type of line you draw, it can portray different levels of energy and mood. We also talked about ways we could learn to describe things in figurative and also poetic ways by careful observation. We must learn that everything is tied together, about parts to a whole and the importance of cohesion.
Our in-class assignment was to draw the lines of a classmate's face. I had some difficulty with this. I think I was trying too hard to get the face to look like the person but hopefully, with practice, it won't be such a challenge. In other words, I was pretty uncomfortable. When it came time to speed up the sketching, I really just tried to focus on finishing up, instead of emphasizing what I had already drawn (which, compared to some of my classmates, wasn't much). So saying, I'm confident my sketches will get better the more I practice. Since I have absolutely no drawing or sketching experience, this may take some time.
Every drawing was described with a few adjectives (such as deep, pronounced, bold, bright) and then summed up with one word (some examples that were used were true, pensive and delicate). We have to sketch faces every day for a week. We'll see how that goes.
